Benefits of Oily Skin- The Japanese Double Cleansing Method

All my life I have had a love-hate relationship with my oily skin. I’ve tried EVERYTHING under the sun, from primers to chafing gel (a trend from a few years back) to even, believe it or not, avoiding moisturizer all together. And I’ve learned that that is a NO NO.

But I’ve realized that my oily skin has so many more benefits that I didn’t realize!

Benefits of Oily Skin

  • Oily skin already has anti-aging properties already built in! Take it from my 57 year-old mom (who looks 35, mind you), who I constantly get confused with as my sister! Natural oils keep skin soft and healthy, no matter the season.

  • Overactive pores create more natural oils, which then ensure for better skin elasticity. Meaning less wrinkles! Think of how oiling a squeaky wheel or keeping up with oil changes for your car help it perform better.

  • Save money on highlighter makeup products! That “glow” is so trendy right now, but it’s artificial. Oily skin is the best makeup dupe because it allows for a natural glow that comes from within, especially on a melanated complexion!

The Japanese Cleansing Method has helped me dramatically change that all-day shine I used to have, into a natural glow, and keeps my skin super soft and smooth!

How It Works:

Expecting to deep clean our pores by washing with a water-based cleanser first is like mixing oil and water, literally. Coconut oil helps draw out the sebum, dirt, dead skin cells and makeup in that lead to clogged pores. Accumulated sebum, basically the bumps on the skin (for me, my chin and nose), are created by sebaceous glands in the hair follicles. That’s why washing with coconut oil works so well! So now the cleanser can do it’s job without any barriers.

Step 1: Wash with warm water to open my pores before cleansing.

Step 2: Wash with coconut oil: I use one that is natural, cold-pressed (the process of making oil without exceeding its natural temperature so it preserves the benefits), and unrefined (meaning not processed and no additives).

Step 3: Wash with African black soap. I use Tropical Naturals’s Dudu-Osun Black Soap (get it here, no matter where you live!).  I love it because it boasts all-natural ingredients like honey, shea butter, and aloe vera (great natural hydrator) without preservatives and artificial colors AND I get to rep my ancestors! Nothing has made my skin feel as squeaky-clean as this soap.

Step 4: Tone with my homemade rice water for better hydration. Read about my quick method here!

Step 5: Moisturize! I use Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with SPF for daily skin protection. It’s oil-free and leaves me with soft skin, without the residue. At night, a small coconut oil at night works as a great moisturizer. Don’t worry, it absorbs so well, that I wake up with baby-soft skin, and no shine! You won’t be looking like an oil slick, trust me.

Quick Tip:

Remember, even in the cold months, you are still exposed to the sun, so you still need that UV ray protection!

You can use the abundance of cleansing products marketed everywhere, but I’m drawn to anything with more natural ingredients, especially something I can DIY and that is inexpensive. In addition to my regimen, I make sure to drink plenty of water to hydrate from within, and to keep away from those skin mattifers. They just leave me with dry skin and clogged pores, which produce even more oil over time!

Oily skin is a GOOD thing. It keeps skin supple, youthful, keeps wrinkles at bay, and is more resilient to the harsh air of the environment. I’m so happy to finally acknowledge this, and I know I will appreciate it even more as I get older.

Remember to be grateful for what you have and find ways to realize that it’s a gift, not a curse. And rock it with unapologetic confidence!
