For far too long, I’ve had a love-hate relationship with my oily skin. I’ve tried absolutely everything, from primers, powders, chafing gel (remember that 2-second trend?) to even avoiding moisturizer all together. But depriving my skin of more moisture and leaving it exposed to UV rays wasn’t doing my skin any favors! Because taking care of yourself physically isn’t superficial. It’s confident self care.
Enter the Japanese Double Cleansing Method! Surprisingly, it helped me go from using blotting papers all day long to touching up only once or twice in an 8-hour day.
An extra benefit? I didn’t realize that this technique would leave my face softer, brighter, and with more elasticity!
How It Works:
Expecting to deep clean your skin by washing with a water-based cleanser first, is like literally mixing oil and water. It doesn’t work.
And those annoying oil pockets or bumps that accumulate in your pores, called sebum, are too stubborn to wash away without extra help. Mixing substances with similar qualities (sebum vs oil) melts and draws out the sebum, dirt, dead skin cells and makeup that can lead to clogged pores and cells slow to regenerate. My personal favorite is coconut oil!
That’s why doing the Japanese Double Cleansing Method works so well! So now your cleanser can do it’s job without any barriers.
The Japanese Double Cleansing Method
Wash face with warm water to open pores before cleansing. Be sure to wash makeup off first!
Rub coconut oil* (or any other natural oil like jojoba, olive, or argan) into skin, massaging into pores for 1 minute.
*I personally use a natural, cold-pressed and unrefined coconut oil, meaning its not processed, has no additives, and retains its benefits without exceeding its natural temperature when produced.
Wash and rinse face with a natural soap made with moisturizing properties. I highly recommend Tropical Naturals‘s Dudu-Osun Black Soap! I love it because it’s made with all-natural ingredients like honey, shea butter, and aloe vera, which is one of the best natural hydrators for your skin. Nothing has made my skin feel as squeaky-clean as this!
Step 4: Optional
This is a crucial step! Make sure to moisturize to retain all the glorious nutrients and hydration you just packed into your skin. I use Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with SPF religiously, for daily skin protection. It’s oil-free and leaves me with soft skin, without the residue and extra shine that can come with sunscreen.
For a nighttime routine, a pea-sized amount of coconut oil at night works as a great moisturizer. Don’t worry, you won’t wake up an oil slick! It actually absorbs directly into the skin, leaving you waking up to soft skin and natural glow.
Pro Tip: Even in the colder months you are still exposed to the sun, so you still need that UV ray protection!
Benefits of Oily Skin
- Oily skin already has anti-aging properties already built right in. Take it from my 57 year-old mom (who looks 35, mind you), who I constantly get confused with as my sister! Natural oils keep skin soft and healthy, especially in the colder months.
- Naturally oily skin creates more natural oils, which then ensure for better skin elasticity. Meaning less wrinkles and fine lines! The oil also acts as a barrier to harsh environmental conditions like wind and pollution.
- Save. Your. Money. Daily use of artificial beauty products like highlighter, powder, and mattifiers are usually full of skin-drying chemicals and preservatives, and definitely don’t come cheap! Glow up naturally (and inexpensively) by using the Japanese Double Cleansing Method daily, and touching up the areas of your face that you prefer to be more matte.
It’s really all about perspective.
You can choose to see your oily skin as a constant hurdle in the moment, or you can focus on the major natural and long-term benefits of having an oilier complexion. Just like with practicing self care, being consistent with different approaches to the problem is key to significant and habitual change.
Your oily skin is a good thing. And the older I get, I am appreciating it more than ever before.
